“Unity Is Not Optional” — Anyang' Nyong'o Speaks Out on ODM Wrangles, Offers Clear Way Forward

Kisumu Governor Professor Anyang’ Nyong’o has broken his silence over the ongoing internal wrangles within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), urging members to put unity above personal interests and remain faithful to the party’s founding principles.

In a strongly worded statement shared on his official X account, the veteran politician reminded party leaders and supporters that ODM was built on the pillars of democracy, inclusivity, and social justice.

He stressed that these values must guide every decision the party makes, especially during challenging moments.

“Unity is not optional. It is the foundation upon which ODM was built,” Nyong’o stated, calling on members to embrace dialogue instead of deepening divisions.

As a founding member and the party’s pioneer Secretary General, Nyong’o positioned himself as a custodian of ODM’s policies and traditions.

His remarks come at a time when the party is facing significant internal tensions, including disagreements over leadership direction, strategy, and its relationship with the national government.

The situation has been further complicated by succession debates following the passing of former party leader Raila Odinga.

Different factions within ODM have emerged, with some leaders pushing for a return to the party’s strong opposition roots, while others are advocating for a more strategic and collaborative approach as the country moves closer to the next general election.

Nyong’o emphasized that mutual respect among members is critical to maintaining the party’s strength and credibility.

He warned that public spats and personal attacks risk weakening the movement that millions of Kenyans look up to as a champion of reforms and equitable development.

“We must choose harmony over hostility. ODM belongs to its supporters and the people of Kenya,” he added.

Political observers believe that Nyong’o’s intervention could help calm tensions within the party. As one of ODM’s respected elders, his voice carries weight, particularly among grassroots supporters who value the party’s historical role in advocating for democratic reforms.
