“A Divided Opposition Hands Ruto Victory” — Edwin Sifuna Explains Why He Is Eyeing United Opposition Camp

 

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has signalled his intention to align himself with the emerging United Opposition camp, even as pressure mounts from sections of his supporters urging him to consider a presidential bid in 2027.

Sifuna, who has recently gained notable popularity both on social media platforms and at grassroots political forums, has become a subject of debate among opposition supporters. 

Some believe his eloquence and firm stance against the government make him a viable presidential contender. However, the senator appears to be prioritising coalition building over personal ambition.

Speaking during a recent interview, Sifuna warned that a fragmented opposition could easily hand President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza camp a smooth path to re-election in the 2027 General Election.

“If we approach 2027 while divided, we will simply be clearing the way for our competitors,” Sifuna stated, underscoring the urgency of unity.

According to the Nairobi lawmaker, President Ruto remains a formidable political strategist with strong mobilisation skills. 

However, Sifuna argued that the ruling side’s greatest advantage would not necessarily come from its strength, but from disorganisation within the opposition ranks.

The senator emphasised that what Kenya needs at this stage is a structured and disciplined alliance capable of presenting a clear alternative agenda to voters. 

He revealed that consultations are ongoing among like-minded leaders to explore the possibility of forming a broad-based coalition that can effectively challenge the government.

Political observers note that Sifuna’s remarks come at a time when opposition figures are increasingly holding joint rallies and engaging in coordinated political tours, particularly in the Gusii region and other opposition strongholds. His camp is widely seen as playing a central role in these engagements.

Despite calls for him to vie for the presidency, Sifuna maintains that timing and strategy are critical in politics. 

He insists that the ultimate goal is not individual glory, but ensuring that the opposition remains competitive and united.
