“Not Again Uhuru”: Gachagua Declares War on Uhuru’s Alleged Kalonzo–Muhoho Strategy as Opposition Rift Deepens

A fresh political storm is reportedly brewing within Kenya’s opposition after former Deputy President and Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua openly criticized what he described as attempts to control the direction of the United Opposition without broad consultation.

The tension follows reports of an alleged plan to endorse Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the coalition’s preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election, with claims that Muhoho Kenyatta, brother to former President Uhuru Kenyatta, was being considered for the running mate position.

Although the details of the alleged arrangement remain unconfirmed publicly, the reports have stirred strong reactions among some opposition figures.

Gachagua, who has recently positioned himself as a key voice in opposition politics, is said to have rejected the reported move, arguing that leadership decisions should be made transparently and with the involvement of all stakeholders. 

Speaking to journalists, he reportedly warned against what he termed as attempts to impose leaders on regions or political formations without consulting grassroots supporters.

According to sources within his camp, Gachagua believes that any coalition seeking to challenge the current administration in 2027 must first build internal democracy and unity. 

He has called for an open process to determine the opposition’s presidential flagbearer, saying that backroom agreements risk weakening trust among supporters.

The disagreement has exposed deeper divisions within opposition circles, where different factions appear to be pushing competing strategies ahead of the next election cycle. 

Some leaders are said to favor early agreements on a single candidate to avoid last-minute disputes, while others insist that nominations should be conducted through a competitive and transparent process.

Political analysts warn that such disputes, if not resolved early, could fragment the opposition and make it harder to mount a strong challenge in 2027. 

They note that coalition politics in Kenya has often been shaped by delicate negotiations, regional interests, and personal rivalries, making unity difficult to sustain.

The situation has attracted significant public attention, especially after Gachagua invited members of the media to his Wamunyoro residence, where he promised to outline his position and the way forward for the opposition. 

The move was widely interpreted as a sign that disagreements within the coalition are shifting from private discussions to open political debate.

As reactions continue to emerge from both leaders and citizens, the unfolding developments highlight the complex and often unpredictable nature of coalition politics in Kenya. 

With the 2027 elections still some time away, many observers believe that how the opposition manages its internal differences in the coming months could play a decisive role in shaping the country’s political landscape.
