Kind Nairobi Man Left Devastated After Lady He Gave Lift Steals His ATM Card, Withdraws Ksh 70K From His Bank Account

A Nairobi man is seeking help from the public after a woman he offered a lift allegedly stole his ATM card and withdrew KSh 70,000 from his bank account, leaving him shocked and financially strained.

The man, who identified himself only as Ken, said the incident happened on the night of Friday, January 2.

According to his account, he had met the woman earlier that evening and later offered to drop her off on his way home. At the time, he did not suspect anything unusual.

Ken believes the woman saw him using his ATM card earlier in the evening and memorized key details.

He claims that at some point during the journey, she took advantage of the situation and stole the card without his knowledge.

He later dropped her in the Satellite area of Riruta after she allegedly told him she was going to pick up keys from a friend.

She left him waiting briefly, but after a few minutes, Ken realised his ATM card was missing. Before he could block the card, two withdrawals had already been made.

CCTV footage from an Equity Bank ATM in Kawangware later showed a woman believed to be the suspect making two transactions, one of KSh 40,000 and another of KSh 30,000, before leaving the ATM area.

Ken reported the matter at Riruta Police Station, and investigations are said to be ongoing. He has also shared images from the CCTV footage online in an effort to identify the suspect and recover his money.

In his appeal, Ken said the loss had affected him greatly and urged anyone who might recognise the woman to come forward with information. He also promised a reward to anyone who could help authorities trace her whereabouts.

The incident has sparked conversations online about personal safety and the risks of trusting strangers, especially in large cities where such cases are increasingly being reported.

Security experts often advise people to remain cautious when handling bank cards in public places, avoid sharing personal financial information, and immediately block a card if it goes missing to prevent unauthorized withdrawals.

Police have encouraged members of the public to report any useful information that may assist in identifying the suspect, noting that community cooperation often plays a key role in solving such cases.
