“If ODM Gets DP Position, A Leader From My Sub-tribe Must Be Given” – Laughter as ODM MP Millie Odhiambo Speaks

Suba North Member of Parliament Millie Odhiambo has sparked laughter and debate after making humorous remarks about the possibility of a political coalition between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Speaking in a light-hearted tone during a public discussion, the outspoken legislator said that if ongoing political talks were to result in ODM securing the Deputy President position, then the slot should be given to a leader from her Suba community.

“On a light note, if that position comes to ODM, then it should come to Suba,” she said, drawing laughter from colleagues and attendees.

Millie, who represents Suba North Constituency in Homa Bay County, joked that her community has historically remained on the margins of top national leadership. She suggested that such an opportunity would be warmly welcomed back home.

Her comments come amid growing speculation about potential political alignments ahead of future elections.

Although no formal coalition agreement has been publicly confirmed between ODM and UDA, conversations about cooperation between the two parties continue to shape national political discourse.

Observers noted that while her statement was delivered humorously, it reflects a broader reality in Kenyan politics — the delicate balancing of regional and ethnic interests when negotiating executive power-sharing arrangements.

In Kenya’s political history, senior government positions have often been influenced by regional considerations, with parties seeking to ensure inclusivity and national balance.

Leaders from smaller communities have repeatedly called for greater representation at the highest levels of government.

Political analysts say that even casual or humorous remarks can signal deeper conversations happening behind the scenes.

In this case, Millie’s joke highlights ongoing discussions about inclusivity, equity, and political bargaining within and across parties.
