President William Ruto recently nominated Mama Ida for the post, with the appointment now awaiting parliamentary vetting and approval.
In a heartfelt statement, Governor Kahiga said the nomination was a moment of pride, noting that Mama Ida’s long record of public service, resilience, and leadership makes her well suited to represent Kenya on the global stage.
He highlighted her background as an educator, pointing out that she served as a teacher at Highway Secondary School before spending more than a decade at Kenya High School, where she mentored and shaped generations of young Kenyans.
Kahiga also reflected on Mama Ida’s personal sacrifices and strength, particularly during Kenya’s turbulent political periods.
He noted that as the lifelong partner of the late former prime minister Raila Odinga, she endured harassment and professional setbacks due to her association with the struggle for justice, democracy, and political freedom.
Despite these challenges, she remained steadfast as a mother, public figure, and advocate for reform.
Beyond education, the governor emphasized Mama Ida’s contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey.
During the early 1990s push for multiparty democracy, she emerged as a key mobiliser, especially among women.

She later became the founding chairperson of the League of Kenya Women Voters, an organisation that promotes democratic participation, accountability, and civic awareness.
According to Kahiga, these experiences have equipped Mama Ida with the resilience, diplomacy, and moral authority needed for an ambassadorial role at UNEP, the UN’s leading environmental body headquartered in Nairobi.
He expressed confidence that she would serve Kenya diligently and effectively, advancing the country’s interests while contributing meaningfully to global environmental discussions.
