Among the victims were a young couple and their one-year-old child, whose deaths have particularly shaken residents. The family was travelling from Nairobi to Nyamira to attend the funeral of a relative when their journey was tragically cut short. Relatives described the loss as unbearable, saying the family had been full of hope as they set out on what was meant to be a brief trip home.
Eyewitnesses reported that the trailer driver fled the scene immediately after the collision, prompting police to launch an intensive manhunt. Authorities have appealed to members of the public to share any information that could help trace the driver and establish the exact cause of the crash.
Grief-stricken families gathered at the mortuary at Nyamira County Teaching and Referral Hospital, where emotional scenes unfolded as loved ones identified the bodies of the deceased. Among them was Zablon Mong’are, who tearfully confirmed the deaths of his sister, her husband and their young child.
Several passengers survived the accident but sustained serious injuries. Hospital officials confirmed that some victims were admitted to the intensive care unit, while others were treated in the accident and emergency department. Two critically injured patients were later referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for specialised care, including neurosurgical treatment.
The tragedy has reignited concerns over road safety on the Nairobi–Nyamira highway, with residents and local leaders calling for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and increased patrols. As investigations continue, affected families are appealing for support as they struggle to cope with the immense loss and prepare to lay their loved ones to rest.
