Through a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting chaired by Uhuru himself, Jubilee carried out major reforms that removed Jeremiah Kioni from the position of Secretary General and instead assigned him a new role as Deputy Party Leader in charge of operations.
Political analysts have interpreted the changes as a sign of a deeper strategy following the party’s severe weakening since the 2022 General Election.
They say Uhuru is preparing the party for transition, with the aim of stepping aside and handing over the reins to former Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i.
Political analyst Musa Kauti says Uhuru made the decision because Jubilee had been reduced to a shadow of the party that once ruled the country.
“Uhuru understands that without dismantling the old system, Jubilee cannot be revived or compete in today’s politics. He is preparing to exit and must reorganize the party, especially after disputes that threatened to split it, with some individuals attempting to wrest control of the leadership,” he says.
Another analyst, David Wafula, sees the changes as Uhuru’s effort to prepare the party for the 2027 election with a mindset of real competition, especially after observing how UDA succeeded through discipline and a strong organizational structure.
On his part, leadership analyst Dr. Simon Musau says the restructuring of Jubilee’s leadership is also driven by Uhuru’s fear that the party could die politically if it is not reorganized early enough.
