Among the notable absentees were Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, and Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata — leaders whose influence in the vote-rich Mt Kenya region cannot be ignored.
The absence raised eyebrows, especially because the meeting had been personally convened by President Ruto, who had urged all elected leaders under the UDA banner to attend and engage with the party’s agenda. Instead, the no-show by these governors sent a quiet but powerful political message.
Interestingly, some of the president’s former political critics, including Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, Juja MP George Koimburi, and former Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto, were present at the meeting a contrast that has fueled debate within political circles.
Political observers note that the snub may point to growing unease within sections of the Mt Kenya leadership, at a time when President Ruto is urging both allies and opponents to clearly outline their political agendas and account for their achievements before Kenyans.
As the president seeks to consolidate support and counter an increasingly vocal opposition, the silence and absence of key Mt Kenya governors could signal deeper undercurrents that may shape future political alignments in the region.
One thing is clear: in Mt Kenya politics, absence is never just absence it is a statement.
