Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, January 28, representatives of the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operators accused the government of failing to provide adequate protection for their members.
They expressed frustration over what they described as repeated incidents of violence, including the alleged torching of matatus, without sufficient intervention from authorities.
“The government has a duty to protect its citizens and businesses, yet our operators continue to face attacks with little to no support,” one operator said.
“The transport sector is one of the largest taxpayers in this country, yet we are left vulnerable to violence.”
The planned strike is expected to significantly disrupt public transport, particularly in major urban centers such as Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu, as thousands of commuters rely on matatus for daily travel.
The PSV operators have called on the government to take immediate action to address the conflicts with boda boda operators, including providing security at matatu stages and enforcing existing transport regulations.
No official response from the government had been reported at the time of publication. Commuters are advised to make alternative travel arrangements ahead of the planned strike.
