The woman, identified as Everline Jepkogei, was seen hugging a tree along a busy street in the town as a way of drawing attention to her plea for assistance.
Everline comes from Kipserkech village in Chepkunyuk Ward, Nandi Hills Constituency.
She is the mother of Olivia Jepchirchir, a bright and hardworking student who is preparing to join Grade 10 at Sambirir Girls High School in Elgeyo-Marakwet County.
Olivia recently completed Grade 9 at Siwo School, where she reportedly performed well and earned a chance to advance to senior secondary school.
According to the mother, lack of money now threatens to cut short her daughter’s education journey.
She explained that she is unable to raise the required school fees, learning materials, uniform, and other basic items needed for Olivia to report to her new school.
With no stable source of income and no other means of support, Everline said she was left with no option but to make a public appeal.
Witnesses said Everline was not alone, as she was among two women who staged the emotional act in Kapsabet town.
The women hugged a tree silently, hoping their action would touch the hearts of passersby and well-wishers.
Many residents stopped to listen to her story, with some offering words of encouragement and small financial support.
Speaking to members of the public, Everline described her daughter as disciplined, focused, and determined to succeed in her studies. She said Olivia dreams of building a better future and helping the family once she completes her education. The mother added that it pains her deeply to see her child’s hopes threatened by poverty despite her good academic performance.
The incident has sparked mixed reactions among residents and education supporters.
Some praised the mother’s courage and love for her child, while others expressed concern over the growing number of needy students unable to continue with their studies due to financial challenges.
Community members have called on leaders, sponsors, and charitable organizations to intervene and support such families.
Everline has made an appeal to anyone willing to assist her daughter to come forward.
She hopes that through public goodwill, Olivia will be able to join Grade 10 without delay.
