Gachagua Accuses President Ruto of Plotting to Split ODM

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused President William Ruto of attempting to divide the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), one of Kenya’s most prominent political parties.

Speaking on Sunday, January 11, 2026, during a church service in Gatundu South, Kiambu County, Gachagua alleged that Ruto had instructed certain officials to undermine ODM’s leadership.

According to him, the president is keen on weakening the party, particularly in regions that have traditionally been ODM strongholds.

Gachagua claimed that Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho was told to demand the party leader position within ODM. When Joho’s request was denied, he was allegedly instructed to start a separate party in the Coast region.

Similarly, Co-operatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya was allegedly given the same directive to sow divisions within ODM.

“He has decided to divide and finish ODM. He has instructed Joho and Oparanya to demand being party leaders. If they are not made party leaders, they should start their own parties. Ruto wants to make ODM a Luo party,” Gachagua said.

Despite these allegations, Gachagua clarified that former President Uhuru Kenyatta was not involved in the internal battles within ODM.

He urged ODM members to respect Kenyatta and not use him as a target in their political conflicts.

“Uhuru Kenyatta tried to help Raila [Odinga] become president, but you, ODM people, refused to turn out and vote, and Raila failed. Uhuru is not the problem of ODM. Don’t be used by Ruto to attack him,” Gachagua stated.

The former deputy president’s remarks come amid ongoing debates over ODM’s leadership and its loss in the 2022 general elections.

Some ODM leaders have blamed Kenyatta for Raila Odinga’s defeat, alleging irregularities with the payment of election agents.

ODM secretary Edwin Sifuna has also defended Kenyatta, accusing some party members of mismanaging funds intended for agents.

During Raila Odinga’s supposed 81st birthday celebration in Mombasa, ODM leaders from the Coast region demanded that Joho be appointed party leader, arguing that he had remained loyal to the party for years.

They warned that if their demand was ignored, they would consider forging their own political path. Some party members also suggested forming a National Delegates Committee (NDC) to manage the infighting and restore unity.

At the Gatundu church service, Gachagua showered Uhuru Kenyatta with praise and wished him a peaceful retirement.

He noted that should the opposition need Kenyatta’s guidance in the future, they would reach out to him.

“I wish Uhuru a very peaceful retirement. We are not disturbing him now. He has the right to associate with anybody. That is his democratic right. For now, we are managing, and we are okay. But if need be, we will request him to come from retirement and help us,” Gachagua said.
