The incident has raised serious concerns about domestic violence and the handling of suspects under detention.
Thirty-three-year-old Caroline Chepkoech Ngetich, who was a junior secondary school teacher at Cheptagum School, died earlier this month under circumstances that were initially believed to be accidental.
She was later confirmed through a postmortem examination to have suffered severe spinal and neck injuries consistent with assault.
Medical findings also established that she was one month pregnant at the time of her death.
Her partner, Anthony Njenga Kariuki, who was of the same age, was arrested after investigators established that his initial account did not match medical findings.
He was arraigned in court and remanded in custody at Longisa Police Station pending further investigations.
Hours after his detention, police officers conducting routine checks discovered that Kariuki had taken his own life inside the cell using socks.
Authorities confirmed that the incident occurred on Thursday evening, prompting immediate internal reviews.
Both bodies were taken to Longisa County Referral Hospital mortuary as the family of the deceased teacher prepared for burial.
Relatives have demanded a thorough investigation to establish the full sequence of events leading to the loss of two lives.
Education unions expressed concern, noting that the deceased had recently been confirmed as a permanent teacher and had shown promise in her profession.
Police investigations are ongoing as the county continues to witness a worrying rise in cases involving violence against women.
