Blogger Pauline Njoroge sparked debate on her Facebook page when she asked Kenyans to weigh in on who between Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi is likely to be President William Ruto’s running mate in 2027.
Her post added a new twist to the succession conversations already heating up within the ruling coalition.
Political discussions over the choice of Ruto’s deputy have been dominating Kenya Kwanza. Over the past, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro have been at the center of speculation, with supporters divided on who should deputize the president in the next election.
However, Njoroge’s suggestion of Wanga and Mudavadi brought a fresh perspective, pushing the debate beyond the Mount Kenya region.
Supporters of Mudavadi believe he is a natural choice. As Prime Cabinet Secretary, he has worked closely with Ruto and is often seen as a calm, experienced leader.
His strong political networks, especially in Western Kenya, could give Ruto an advantage in a region that has traditionally leaned toward the opposition.
Mudavadi’s defenders argue that he has the right temperament and national appeal to unite different political blocs.
On the other hand, Governor Gladys Wanga represents youthful leadership, gender inclusivity, and political diversity. As the first female governor from Nyanza, she has been rising steadily in national politics.
Picking her as a running mate would signal a bold move by Ruto to reach out to Raila Odinga’s stronghold.
Analysts say this could weaken the opposition’s dominance in Nyanza and give Ruto credibility on issues of inclusivity and women empowerment.
