President William Ruto has strongly responded to Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka following claims about who built the Kibwezi–Maua road.
The exchange has sparked a heated public debate between the two senior politicians.
Speaking on Tuesday, December 16, President Ruto said Kalonzo was wrong to claim that he launched or built the Kibwezi–Maua road.
According to Ruto, the road was constructed after he and former President Uhuru Kenyatta came into office in 2013.
Ruto said the government has records to prove when the road was built. He dismissed Kalonzo’s remarks and said Kenyans should not be misled.
"He is saying he built the road from Kibwezi to Mbondoni. I want to tell him there are no Fools in Kenya," Ruto said. "That road was built by Uhuru and me after we took over the government. We have the facts."
The President also reacted to Kalonzo’s statement that he has only been in politics for 40 years, not 50 as earlier claimed. Ruto said even 40 years is a long time for someone not to complete development projects in their own home area.
"He says it’s not fifty years but forty years. Are forty years a short time?" Ruto asked. "In forty years, you could not plan a road to your own home."
Kalonzo had earlier said that when he was Vice President, he launched the construction of the road passing through Tseikuru.
He claimed that a Chinese company, Sinohydro, was awarded the contract to build the road from Kibwezi through Kitui and Mwingi to Maua.
The Wiper leader made the claims after President Ruto accused him of being in leadership for decades without delivering development to his home area. Ruto had pointed out that the road leading to Kalonzo’s home in Tseikuru remained dusty.
The back-and-forth between the two leaders has drawn public attention, with many Kenyans questioning who is telling the truth.
