Tough Times for Wanga after Leaders Gang Against Her as Effort to Team up With Ruto Backfire

ODM party chairperson Gladys Wanga is facing mounting pressure from senior party leaders who have openly criticized her for allegedly attempting to forge ties with President William Ruto.

The confrontations have set off a tense standoff within the party, raising questions about internal cohesion as the 2027 general election approaches.

Deputy party leader Godfrey Osotsi, Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, and Siaya Governor James Orengo have all publicly denounced Wanga, accusing her of seeking to “hand over” ODM to outside interests.

The leaders insisted that ODM is not for sale and emphasized that any political alliance with external figures must first receive the endorsement of the majority of party members.

“This is not a personal matter,” Sifuna said during a recent press briefing. “The party belongs to its members, and no single leader can unilaterally make decisions that could compromise our position ahead of the next election.”

Osotsi and Orengo echoed similar sentiments, vowing to block any agreements perceived to undermine the party’s autonomy.

Wanga, however, has rejected claims that she is negotiating to surrender ODM to President Ruto.

While acknowledging the need for dialogue in politics, she emphasized that the party will not enter into any arrangement that leaves it disadvantaged.

“ODM remains committed to protecting the interests of our members and ensuring that any discussions or partnerships are fair and transparent,” Wanga said.

The dispute highlights the delicate balancing act Wanga faces in navigating party unity while exploring potential strategic alliances.

Some observers say her outreach to President Ruto, if not carefully managed, could deepen divisions within ODM and erode her influence among senior leaders.

As the 2027 elections draw nearer, Wanga’s challenge will be to maintain credibility among party loyalists while steering ODM through an increasingly complex political landscape, where accusations of backdoor deals and power struggles continue to dominate headlines.
