Tension Rises as Oburu Oginga Fiercely Addresses President Ruto In Dholuo Over Migori Killings

Siaya senator Oburu Oginga has strongly appealed to President William Ruto to intervene and address the rising cases of violence and insecurity affecting fishermen along Lake Victoria.

Speaking during the Piny Luo cultural festival held in Migori County, Oburu raised concern over the growing number of deaths and arrests involving Kenyan fishermen operating in the lake.

Addressing the president directly in Dholuo, the senator said many fishermen from Migori and neighbouring Homa Bay counties continue to face harassment, arrest and alleged mistreatment after being taken across the border into Tanzania.

He urged the national government to prioritise diplomatic engagement to protect the livelihoods and lives of those who depend on the lake for survival.

Oburu noted that Lake Victoria is a shared resource and called for peaceful cooperation between neighbouring countries to prevent unnecessary loss of life.

He stressed that fishermen should not be subjected to violence or inhumane treatment while carrying out their daily work.

Despite his firm message, Oburu welcomed President Ruto to the lakeside region and acknowledged the importance of unity and respect for cultural traditions during the event.

The remarks drew applause from residents who have long complained about insecurity on the lake.

In his response, President Ruto greeted the crowd in Dholuo and assured residents of his commitment to inclusive leadership and development across the country.

He said his administration values unity and dialogue as key pillars of national progress.

The president also announced several development projects aimed at boosting the local economy in Migori County.

These included a major road construction programme, upgrades to local markets and plans to build a modern pier at Muhuru Bay to support fishing and transport activities.

Ruto said the projects would improve trade, create jobs and enhance safety for fishermen and traders who rely on Lake Victoria for their livelihoods.
