Ruto Faces 1992-Style Political Isolation, Gachagua Warns Mt Kenya

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has compared President William Ruto’s current political challenges to what former President Daniel arap Moi faced in 1992, saying the State is trying to weaken Mt Kenya ahead of the 2027 elections.

Gachagua made the remarks on Tuesday during a burial service in Kakuzi-Mitumbiri, Gatanga Constituency.

He said President Ruto is facing political pressure from almost every region, just as Moi did when he sought re-election three decades ago.

According to Gachagua, this pressure has pushed the government into a strategy aimed at dividing Mt Kenya’s vote-rich base.

He described himself as the biggest obstacle to that plan.

Gachagua said Moi survived the 1992 political storm by causing divisions among opposition leaders who had strong support across the country.

He argued that the same model is now being revived to help the Kenya Kwanza government remain in power beyond 2027.

“President Ruto is cornered. From Mt Kenya, Eastern, Nairobi and the Coast, things are not easy. He is in the same place Moi was in 1992,” Gachagua said during the event.

He explained that Moi faced intense rejection from Mt Kenya at the time and overcame it by ensuring key opposition leaders split the vote.

Gachagua recalled how leaders like Kenneth Matiba, Mwai Kibaki and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga shared the opposition vote in 1992 while Moi won with fewer votes than their combined total.

“Matiba got the Murang’a and Kiambu area votes. Kibaki got Nyeri, Meru, Kirinyaga and Embu. Jaramogi swept Nyanza. They had more votes together, but because they were divided, Moi won,” Gachagua said, warning that the same formula is now being reintroduced.

He claimed that the government wants to weaken Mt Kenya unity because the region has rejected Ruto’s leadership.

“What they want now is to break the mountain. They believe that is the only chance they have for 2027,” he told mourners.

Gachagua insisted that he is the only leader standing between Mt Kenya and politicians trying to fragment it.

He said the strong attacks he has been receiving from government circles show that he is being targeted because he refuses to abandon the region’s unity.

“They call me tribal, but that is not the problem in Kenya,” he said. “The real issues are theft of public money, misuse of state resources, and violation of human rights.”

This is not the first time Gachagua has accused the government of meddling in Mt Kenya politics. A few months ago, while speaking in Mbeere South, he claimed that President Ruto was uniting his own Kalenjin community while encouraging divisions in Mt Kenya.

At that time, Gachagua said leaders such as Interior CS Kithure Kindiki were being used to weaken the region politically. He urged residents to remain united and reject any leaders sent to divide them.

During the Tuesday event, Gachagua repeated the same warning, saying the region must protect its political strength if it hopes to negotiate fairly in future governments.

“Let us not allow anyone to scatter our votes. We have to speak with one voice,” he said.

Gachagua also told residents to be careful about leaders who suddenly align themselves with the government, saying some are doing so for personal gain. He encouraged voters to judge such leaders by their actions, not their public promises.

The former Deputy President said Mt Kenya must learn from history and avoid repeating the mistakes that weakened the region’s influence in past elections.
