Pressure is mounting on authorities to explain the circumstances surrounding the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, following renewed calls from opposition leaders for a transparent and independent investigation.
The leaders raised concerns after visiting Jirongo’s Nairobi home, where they met his family and paid their respects. They questioned what happened in the final hours before his fatal road accident along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway on December 13.
Leading the call, opposition figures demanded answers from National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who confirmed that he met Jirongo on the evening before the accident. According to them, the meeting, which took place shortly after Jamhuri Day celebrations, has become a key point of public interest.
Opposition leaders said Kenyans deserve a full explanation of who was with Jirongo on the night he died and why some of those individuals have remained silent. They argued that the public silence has only fueled speculation and mistrust.
“There are serious questions that must be answered,” one opposition leader said. “People who were with him that night knew him well. The country deserves clarity about what happened.”
Wetang’ula earlier explained that Jirongo had called him requesting a meeting. The two reportedly met for about an hour before parting ways, with Wetang’ula saying he left to rest ahead of a planned trip the following day. He said he later learned of Jirongo’s death through messages the next morning.
Despite this explanation, opposition leaders insist that investigators should carefully examine all interactions Jirongo had that night, including meetings, phone calls, and movements.
The fatal accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday when Jirongo’s vehicle collided with a passenger bus near Karai. While investigators have said preliminary findings point to a road crash, public debate has continued, with many Kenyans calling for deeper scrutiny.
Political leaders visiting the family urged the government to fast-track investigations and ensure all evidence is reviewed thoroughly. They called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to analyze CCTV footage, collect statements from witnesses, and record accounts from passengers aboard the bus involved in the crash.
Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, who also spoke on the matter, said Jirongo’s family deserves the truth. He appealed for an investigation that is independent, transparent, and free from political influence.
Investigators have confirmed they are reviewing surveillance footage from locations Jirongo visited before the accident, including a petrol station where he stopped briefly moments before the crash. They are also recording statements from individuals he interacted with earlier that night.
Jirongo, aged 64, was a well-known political figure who rose to prominence in the 1990s. His sudden death has shocked the nation and sparked widespread debate, especially on social media.
