Police investigations into the tragic road accident that claimed the life of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo are still ongoing, with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) now focusing on the driver of the public service vehicle involved in the crash.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, December 13, along the Naivasha highway. Jirongo was driving his Mercedes-Benz when it collided with a Climax Coaches bus that was ferrying passengers at the time. The former legislator died on the spot after sustaining severe injuries.
According to the DCI, the bus driver, identified as Tyrus Kamau, has already recorded a statement with traffic officers in Naivasha. Investigators say Kamau is currently out on police bail as inquiries continue, but he could face charges if evidence shows he was responsible for the crash.
Police sources indicate that the driver may be charged with causing death by dangerous driving if investigations establish negligence or traffic violations. He has been instructed to report back to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22 for further directions from investigators.
The DCI has also expanded its probe to include witness accounts and forensic evidence. Statements have been taken from a fuel station attendant and a night guard who were on duty near the scene shortly before the crash occurred. Their testimonies are expected to help reconstruct Jirongo’s final movements.
In addition, detectives are reviewing CCTV footage collected from nearby businesses, including a petrol station where Jirongo briefly stopped moments before the accident. Preliminary findings show that the former MP spent less than two minutes at the station before rejoining the highway.
Investigators revealed that Jirongo’s car changed direction shortly after leaving the petrol station and was hit seconds later. The impact reportedly pushed the vehicle several metres off the road, while the bus came to a stop further ahead. Forensic experts from Nairobi have since secured key evidence from the wreckage.
The DCI is also planning to interview passengers who were travelling in the Climax bus, as well as other motorists who may have witnessed the incident. Authorities believe these accounts could provide crucial clarity on how the collision happened.
Once all statements, CCTV footage, and forensic reports are analysed, police will compile a detailed investigation file. This file will then be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for legal review and guidance on possible charges.
