Murang’a Catholic Diocesan Bishop Maria Wainaina has called on Kenyans to be careful when choosing leaders in the 2027 General Election, urging voters to reject those who have failed to deliver on their promises.
The bishop said many leaders currently in office have shown little commitment to serving the people and therefore should not be given another opportunity to lead.
She made the remarks on Tuesday, December 30, during celebrations marking the end of the church calendar year at St Mary’s Cathedral in Murang’a.
According to Bishop Wainaina, voters should judge leaders based on their past performance, warning that leaders who have failed once are unlikely to change if re-elected.
“Citizens should clearly identify leaders who have failed to fulfil their promises and ensure they do not return to office,” she said.
The bishop cautioned that as the 2027 elections draw closer, politicians will intensify campaigns and attempt to win public support using sweet promises that may never be fulfilled.
She urged voters to distinguish between leaders who genuinely want to serve the people and those who are only interested in power and personal gain.
Bishop Wainaina also warned against vote-buying, saying cash handouts and donations should not influence voters’ decisions.
“The little money given during campaigns is not worth sacrificing good leadership,” she noted, adding that such gifts are often used to manipulate voters.
She emphasised that Kenyans must take responsibility for the leaders they elect, pointing out that poor leadership is a direct result of poor voting choices.
“We are responsible for the kind of leadership we get. That is why we must choose leaders who will protect our interests and serve the people honestly,” she said.
On leadership accountability, the bishop reminded elected leaders that public office is about service, not personal enrichment.
“Anyone who seeks an elective position must understand that leadership is a responsibility to serve, not an opportunity to exploit the people,” she said.
Bishop Wainaina also stated that the church will continue playing its role in promoting accountability and good governance, both by guiding leaders and educating citizens.
She added that the church will help voters understand the qualities they should look for in leaders, including integrity, competence, and commitment to public service.
“The church has a duty to guide both leaders and citizens so that the country moves in the right direction,” she said.
Her remarks come at a time when public debate around leadership, accountability, and governance is gaining momentum ahead of the next general election.
