Kenyans React After Spotting Similarities in William Ruto, Abdulswamad Nassir’s Tributes to Jirongo

NAIROBI – Kenyans have reacted with surprise after noticing striking similarities in condolence messages posted by President William Ruto and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir following the death of former Lugari MP, Cyrus Jirongo.

Both leaders shared their grief over Jirongo’s passing in a road accident, praising his fearless political spirit, entrepreneurial drive, generosity, and leadership. 

However, many social media users pointed out that entire phrases and sentiments in the two messages were nearly identical, raising eyebrows among netizens.

Governor Nassir wrote: 

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my friend, former Lugari Member of Parliament, Cyrus Jirongo. He was a force of nature—fearless, driven, and unapologetically himself. A sharp political mind and astute businessman, he faced life head-on and refused to let circumstances or conventions define him. He was straightforward, yet warm; bold, yet deeply human. His entrepreneurial spirit was matched only by his bravery in taking bold stands. Cyrus was generous in every way—sharing his time, resources, and belief in others. He was always ready to mentor, uplift, and open doors for those around him. My heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends, and everyone who walked this journey with him. May they find strength in his legacy and in the many lives he touched. Rest in peace, my friend.”

President Ruto’s tribute carried a similar tone: 

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend, former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo. He was a relentless go-getter, a seasoned businessman, and a seasoned politician who refused to let life’s challenges define or defeat him. Cyrus was a fighter, blunt but warm, bold yet approachable, enlightened, and endlessly entrepreneurial. Above all, he was incredibly generous—always ready to give, to uplift others, and back them with his time, resources, and belief. Never one to shy away from tough positions or big ideas, he lived on his terms and left an indelible mark on our political landscape. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time. Rest in peace, my friend.”

Radio presenter Gidi Gidi shared screenshots of the two tributes on social media, prompting netizens to point out the similarities. 

Many noted that the overlapping wording and expressions suggested coordination or a shared template in paying homage to the late MP.

Jirongo, known for his bold and outspoken political style, passed away in the early hours of the morning at Karai area in Nakuru County, following a road accident involving a Climax Coach bus. Witnesses say the driver tried to avert the collision but was unable to prevent the tragedy.
