Kenya Met Lists 7 Regions to Receive Heavy Rains for Next Five Days

The Kenya Meteorological Department has released a new five-day weather notice, signalling a major change after nearly two months of dry and dusty conditions across the country.

According to the latest advisory, several regions should expect moderate to heavy rainfall beginning Friday, December 12, with the intensity gradually increasing over the coming days.

This fresh update comes at a time when many parts of Kenya have been experiencing unusually dry weather.

Farmers, motorists, and residents had expressed concern about the prolonged heat and dust, and the announcement of rain has brought relief as well as caution.

The advisory shows that rainfall will be more pronounced in Central Kenya, the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Coast, the Northeastern region, and the South-Eastern Lowlands.

Counties such as Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi are expected to start receiving showers from Friday evening. The rainfall is forecast to strengthen on Saturday, continue through Sunday, and increase further by Monday.

Western and Rift Valley areas will also be significantly affected. These include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Kericho, Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet, Narok, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot. Many of these regions have a history of flooding during heavy rains, so residents are advised to stay alert.

In the Northeastern region, including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, the rains will be moderate but still significant enough to break the long dry spell.
Temperature Shifts Ahead

Alongside the rainfall announcement, the Met Department has issued a temperature advisory. Central Kenya and parts of the Rift Valley will experience very cold nights, with temperatures expected to drop to 5°C. Residents, especially in high-altitude areas, have been urged to keep warm during the chilly nights.

In sharp contrast, daytime conditions will be extremely hot in the Coastal and Northeastern counties. Areas such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale may record temperatures of up to 37°C, creating wide variations between day and night.

Kenyans are encouraged to plan their activities around the changing weather, stay aware of possible flooding, and take precautions during cold nights and hot afternoons.

The advisory is expected to guide farmers, transport operators, and households as the weather shifts across the country.
