Kasmuel Shares Reasons Why Ruto Should Not Abandon UDA and Vie on ODM Ticket in 2027

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Youth League member Kasmuel McOure has called on ODM and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to engage in a strategic pre-election agreement ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election.

Speaking via social media on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, McOure emphasized that the two parties should collaborate through a coalition rather than dissolving their individual structures to form a single entity.

“The path forward is decisiveness,” McOure said.

“We strengthen ODM by engaging in a well-negotiated pre-election pact with President Ruto, while simultaneously reinvigorating our grassroots structures and sustaining the aggressive mobilisation that defines our political DNA. This is how serious parties mature into governing forces.”

McOure argued that it would be unrealistic to expect ODM to abandon its party machinery, just as it would be unreasonable to ask President William Ruto to leave the political vehicle that brought him to power.

Both ODM and UDA, he noted, are grounded in historical loyalties, institutional structures, and party identities that cannot be ignored.

According to McOure, the revival and strengthening of ODM cannot rely on ultimatums, emotional posturing, or unclear strategies. Instead, the party should pursue a deliberate approach, focused on clear objectives and tactical partnerships.

“History shows that ambiguity has never worked in the party’s favour,” he said, stressing that decisiveness and strategic clarity are essential for political maturity.

From a practical standpoint, McOure indicated that a clearly articulated pre-election strategy, publicly endorsed by both parties, offers ODM the best opportunity for presidential success.

Durable coalitions, he explained, are built on shared interests, defined roles, mutual respect, and institutional discipline.

McOure also highlighted the importance of leadership clarity within ODM. Bold, unambiguous direction from party leaders, he argued, is crucial to maintain credibility and cohesion.

If the party is committed to the Broad-Based Government (BBG), it must execute its mandate responsibly, deliver tangible joint achievements, and appeal to the electorate based on performance rather than rhetoric.

He further suggested that leaders opposed to the coalition framework should make their position known early, exit decisively, and pursue independent paths without ambiguity.

According to McOure, such an approach protects the party from internal confusion and ensures that strategic planning remains on course.

The ODM Youth League member stressed that the long-term interests of the party, as well as the broader Kenyan population, are best served through a constructive partnership with President Ruto that extends beyond the 2027 elections.

“The Broad-Based Government should exemplify the nation’s best governance practices, rather than serve as a platform for competing egos or partisan confusion,” he said.

McOure’s remarks come amid ongoing debates within ODM, where some senior leaders advocate for maintaining a distinct opposition role rather than forming a coalition with UDA.

He urged the party to prioritise clarity over nostalgia, structure over sentiment, and strategic planning over disorder as the 2027 elections approach.

In conclusion, McOure reiterated that a pragmatic pre-election agreement with UDA would provide ODM with a credible and disciplined pathway to national influence while preserving its institutional integrity.
