In a statement shared on X on Tuesday, December 30, McOure argued that ODM’s constitution is clear on who holds the party’s presidential mandate.
He said it would be illogical for the party to present another candidate when its political leadership is centred in Oburu Odinga’s office.
According to McOure, the ODM party leader automatically becomes the party’s flag bearer in a presidential race unless the constitution is changed.
“ODM has only one presidential candidate for 2027 if it goes solo — the party leader, Senator Dr Oburu Oginga,” McOure stated.

“This is not about opinions or personal choices. It is what the party constitution provides.”
He insisted that Oburu Odinga is not serving in a temporary capacity, stressing that he remains the legitimate party leader until he lawfully leaves office.
“The political direction of the party flows from the office of the party leader. Dr Oburu Oginga is the leader both in practice and in law,” he added.
McOure’s remarks come shortly after ODM Deputy Party Leader and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir suggested that the party should consider entering into a coalition with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the 2027 elections.
Reacting to such views, McOure dismissed suggestions that other party officials can determine ODM’s presidential direction.

He said only the party leader has the constitutional authority to make decisions regarding the presidency.
“No other official has the mandate to negotiate or decide ODM’s presidential path. That responsibility lies solely with the party leader,” he said.
McOure also warned against what he described as parallel negotiations or unofficial arrangements being made in the party’s name.
“All other views, regardless of who expresses them, remain personal opinions and do not amount to party policy,” he noted, adding that Oburu Odinga’s position on the 2027 presidential race should be considered final.
The comments come at a time when ODM is facing internal disagreements over its relationship with the Kenya Kwanza administration and whether it should continue cooperating with President Ruto beyond the current broad-based government framework.
Since the death of longtime party leader Raila Odinga in October 2025, divisions within ODM have become more visible, with differing views emerging on leadership, alliances, and the party’s future strategy.
