Kirinyaga Women Representative Jane Njeri Maina has announced she will take a break from frontline politics during the first six months of 2026, citing exhaustion after what she described as her most demanding year yet.
In a candid social media post shared on Wednesday, the legislator revealed that 2025 had left her "spread thin and exhausted," proving more challenging than even her campaign year.
The Gachagua ally disclosed she had been "practically a visitor in my own home" due to extensive political activities across the country.
Maina's announcement comes after a tumultuous year in Kenyan politics, particularly for allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The young politician has been actively involved in defending Gen-Z protesters and navigating the complex political landscape following Gachagua's impeachment in October 2024.
"I had so much on my shoulders, sketchy plans of how we were going to defend the Gen-Z's," Maina wrote, referencing her involvement in supporting the youth-led protests that rocked the country in 2024 and continued into 2025.
The Women Representative emphasized that while she will be stepping away from the political frontline, she will still be accessible to her constituents.
"If you'll be looking for me, know I'm around, but away from the frontline a bit. I need to catch some breath," she stated.
Maina's decision to take a political sabbatical is significant given the approaching 2027 general election cycle.
As a visible ally of Gachagua, she has been part of the political maneuvering in the Mt Kenya region, where competition for influence between Gachagua's faction and President William Ruto's camp has intensified.
The announcement highlights the personal toll of Kenya's high-intensity political environment, particularly for young leaders caught in factional battles.
Maina's six-month retreat suggests a need for rest and strategic repositioning ahead of what promises to be another contentious election season.
She concluded her message by wishing Kenyans "a happy and blessed 2026."
