Political analyst Zachariah Baraza has said that Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka stands a strong chance of defeating President William Ruto in the 2027 general election.
Baraza described Kalonzo as a respected leader who enjoys great support from the Eastern region and has earned the trust of many Kenyans.
Speaking on Thursday, Baraza said Kalonzo’s calm and unifying nature makes him the right person to lead the opposition alliance that is being formed ahead of the next polls.
He noted that Kalonzo’s leadership style attracts people who want peace and stability.
“Kalonzo Musyoka is the Eastern Kingpin. He has the numbers, and people have confidence in him. That is why they are following him,” Baraza said.
He added that Kalonzo is not an extremist and that his ability to work with leaders from all sides of the political divide gives him an advantage over his competitors.
The analyst also pointed out that the new opposition coalition has been holding meetings to choose a single presidential candidate.
Other names mentioned for the position include former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua, and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.
The team is expected to announce its preferred candidate early next year to allow enough time for campaigns and grassroots mobilization.
Baraza urged opposition leaders to put the country first and avoid selfish interests. He warned that divisions among them could weaken their ability to challenge President Ruto’s government.
“If they unite behind one leader, they can give the Kenya Kwanza administration a serious competition,” he said.
In recent months, Kalonzo has been busy visiting different parts of the country to strengthen his political base and build new alliances.
His growing popularity and reputation as a peace-seeking leader have given him renewed strength as he eyes the top seat.
Many observers now believe that Kalonzo Musyoka could finally have his best chance to become president if the opposition parties fully unite behind him.
His long political experience, calm approach, and wide support across regions may make him a tough opponent for President Ruto in 2027.
