Deaf Man Who Survived Easy Coach Bus Crash Recounts Terrify Last Moments Before Accident

A deaf man who survived the Easy Coach bus accident on the Eldoret–Kitale Highway has shared his experience of the terrifying crash that occurred on Sunday morning, December 14, 2025.

The incident claimed the life of a woman believed to be the wife of a police officer and left several passengers injured.

In an exclusive interview, the man’s relative explained that the couple had chosen to leave their private car at home due to high fuel costs and instead travelled by bus. Unfortunately, their choice exposed them to a life-threatening accident.

The relative said she first learned about the crash through a text message from the couple. When there was no response to her reply, she called again, and someone at the crash site answered, confirming the accident.

“By the time I arrived, some passengers had already been taken to Eldoret Hospital. Thankfully, my family members were alive. Most people at the scene had only minor injuries,” she recounted.

According to the survivor, the crash occurred when the bus began swerving uncontrollably. He was seated just behind the driver and noticed the bus moving in a zigzag pattern.

“He told me he was alert, but the bus kept weaving dangerously. It seemed like it was about to topple on the driver’s side. Then the driver jerked the steering wheel suddenly, and the bus veered off the road,” the relative explained.

The survivor suspects the driver may have been sleepy or drowsy, although the bus was not speeding.

“The road was clear, and the bus was moving at a normal speed, around 70 km/h, but the sudden swerving didn’t make sense. My brother thinks the driver dozed off,” the relative added.

The conditions of the road may have contributed to the accident. It was narrow, wet from recent rain, and sloped on one side, making it difficult for the driver to regain control.

After the bus toppled, other passengers screamed, but the deaf survivor could not hear them. He also could not warn the driver about the impending crash because of the communication barrier.

Both members of the deaf couple sustained injuries. The man hurt his shoulders while his wife suffered waist pain and a severe headache.

Their family called on Easy Coach to prioritise passenger safety by ensuring that buses, especially older vehicles, are well-serviced and that at least two drivers are on long trips. They emphasized the importance of adequate rest for drivers to prevent such tragedies.

“We have loved this company for years, but these recent accidents have really shocked us. Employing two drivers per trip, especially during busy festive seasons, could save many lives,” the relative said.

This accident is not isolated. Another Easy Coach bus reportedly collided with a trailer near Salgaa while travelling from Nairobi to Kisumu, leaving over 28 people injured.

These repeated incidents have raised concerns among Kenyan citizens and leaders, prompting calls for stricter road safety measures during the festive season.
