Martha Karua Warns Kenyans Against Corruption and Vote-Buying Ahead of 2027 Elections

During the burial of PLP member Emy Siganga in Matende, Malava Constituency, Kakamega County, on Saturday, November 29, 2025, Martha Karua, the presidential candidate of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), issued a strong warning to Kenyans about growing corruption in the country’s political system.

She accused the government of engaging in vote-buying, abuse of state power, and other corrupt practices during the recent by-elections.

Karua urged citizens to remain vigilant and not to surrender their constitutional rights by accepting bribes or supporting leaders who only prioritize personal gain.

She emphasized that the patterns witnessed in the Mbeere North by-election were alarming and could signal worse political repression if left unchecked.

Drawing comparisons to neighboring countries, Karua warned that Kenyans must protect their rights or risk seeing similar political suppression at the national level.

The veteran politician highlighted that voter bribery had evolved in surprising ways, noting that even household items like bedding were being used to influence voters a tactic she described as disturbing and unacceptable.

She called on citizens to reject such manipulations and to vote for leaders who genuinely serve the public interest.

Speaking to mourners, Karua said that the upcoming general election would test the country’s commitment to democracy.

She stressed that citizens should not allow themselves to be swayed by short-term gains but instead consider the long-term impact of their choices.

According to her, protecting democracy and holding leaders accountable is a responsibility for every Kenyan, not just a few politicians.
