Ida Odinga Sends Message To Hungry Mourners Going To Mourn Hubby Raila Odinga At Opoda Farm

Mama Ida Odinga was overcome with emotion when Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka led a grand delegation from Ukambani to her Bondo home to pay tribute to her late husband, Raila Odinga.

The visit, held at the family’s Opoda Farm in Siaya County, drew hundreds of mourners, including governors, senators, MPs, and elders representing various Kamba clans.

In a striking display of solidarity and cultural respect, Kalonzo arrived with 100 head of cattle—a gesture that left Ida and many guests in awe.

According to Luo customs, cattle are a powerful symbol of honour when mourning a great leader, but such a large number was nearly unheard of.

Addressing the crowd, Ida admitted she initially thought she had misheard the announcement.

“When Kalonzo said he had brought one hundred cows, I thought my ears were deceiving me. I even called Governor James Orengo to confirm. But when I saw the herd myself, I was amazed,” she said, visibly moved.

She praised the delegation’s generosity, saying the offering reflected genuine friendship and deep respect for Raila’s legacy.

In addition to the livestock, Kalonzo’s team delivered a large consignment of foodstuffs to sustain the family and the many mourners who continue to visit. Ida humorously remarked that the supplies were enough “to feed guests until Christmas,” thanking the Kamba community for their kindness and unity.

Reflecting on the decades-long bond between Kalonzo and Raila, Ida described the former vice president as one of her husband’s most loyal allies.

Kalonzo had previously shelved his own presidential ambitions to back Raila in the 2013, 2017, and 2022 general elections — a sacrifice she said proved the strength of their friendship.

Kalonzo, for his part, said he came to Bondo to “mourn a true comrade and patriot.”

He recalled moments they faced danger together, especially during the 2023 anti-government demonstrations, when police fired live bullets and teargas at protestors.

“We led from the front, and Raila never flinched,” he said.
