Growing Tension in Homa Bay as ODM Officials Clash With Deputy Governor Over Kasipul Politics

Tension is rising in Homa Bay County after ODM officials openly challenged Deputy Governor Oyugi Magwanga for supporting Philip Aroko, an independent candidate in the Kasipul by-election.

The move has stirred strong reactions from both party officials and residents, who feel Magwanga’s decision went against the spirit of unity within the ODM family.

According to a section of ODM leaders in the county, Magwanga’s support for Aroko weakened the party’s position during the by-election and exposed deeper political cracks that could grow even wider before the 2027 general election.

They argued that senior county leaders are expected to back the party’s candidates, especially during competitive polls, to maintain confidence and discipline within ODM structures.

Aroko, who ran as an independent, lost the contest. Soon after the results were announced, several ODM officials accused the deputy governor of working against the party’s interests.

They claimed his actions sent a confusing message to supporters and risked dividing the party at a time when unity is needed most.

The criticism quickly spread beyond party offices and into the public.

Some residents joined the calls for Magwanga to resign, saying he had betrayed the party that helped him rise to his current position.

Others argued that if he refused to step aside, the county assembly should consider impeachment as a way of protecting the party’s stability and ensuring loyalty among elected leaders.

However, despite the loud demands, Magwanga has not clearly stated what he plans to do next.
