Two people lost their lives, and several others were injured in a serious accident along the Mwea-Embu Highway on Sunday, September 14, 2025.
The crash involved a Toyota Probox colliding head-on with a boda boda, killing the motorcycle rider instantly.
Eyewitnesses said the Probox was being driven recklessly, appearing to race another vehicle to reach Nairobi faster.
Both vehicles took up the entire road, leaving no space for the oncoming boda boda, which led to the deadly collision.
“One of the cars hit a motorbike while overtaking a tuk-tuk. The boda boda rider died instantly, and the Probox driver also lost his life,” one witness explained.

Another observer confirmed that the vehicles were transporting miraa to Nairobi and were moving at high speed to arrive first.
Photos and videos from the scene showed severe damage to both vehicles. The Probox was badly damaged on the driver’s side, while the highway was littered with broken car parts.
Local residents described the area as a danger zone and called for urgent safety measures. Many urged authorities to widen the road or install speed bumps, citing frequent reckless driving and speeding as growing concerns.
This accident comes less than a day after another crash along the Nairobi–Naivasha Highway. A bus ferrying Gor Mahia Football Club fans reportedly lost control while speeding, veered off the road, and overturned, leaving several people injured.
“These incidents show the increasing risks of reckless driving on our highways,” a resident said. “Authorities need to enforce traffic rules strictly to prevent such tragedies.”
Police have launched investigations into the Mwea-Embu Highway crash. They are looking into whether speed and dangerous overtaking caused the accident.
