Forgotten Hero: Kenya's Ex-athlete Hezekiah Nyamau Pleads For Help As He Battles Critical Illness

Among them is Hezekiah Nyamau, the sprinter who brought glory in the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Today, however, the 88-year-old is ailing and is asking for help as he faces the hardest race of his life—poor health and limited support.

Nyamau’s golden moment came more than five decades ago when he teamed up with Charles Asati, Robert Ouko, and Julius Sang to win gold in the 4x400 meters relay.

That victory was historic because it showed the world that Kenya was not only dominant in long-distance running but could also triumph in sprinting.

It was a moment that gave Kenyans pride and reshaped how the world viewed the country’s athletes.

But the man who once outran the best now struggles quietly. Illness has drained his energy, and the cost of treatment has placed a heavy burden on his family.

Friends close to him say he lives modestly and worries about the rising medical bills that he cannot cover alone.

His appeal is directed to fellow Kenyans, the government, and the athletics community, asking that they stand with him as he stood for the nation many years ago.

Nyamau’s life story carries two sides—one of triumph, and one of neglect.

As a decorated army officer and Olympic champion, he gave much to Kenya. Yet in retirement, like many other heroes, he finds himself forgotten.

His situation has sparked debate about how the country values those who brought fame and honor in the past.

Sports officials and former athletes who trained with him are now calling for urgent action.

They believe his legacy deserves more than memories and medals locked in history books.

“We owe it to our champions to ensure they live with dignity,” said one athletics veteran.

His current struggle is more than personal—it reflects the fate of many who once made headlines but later vanished into silence.

Kenya’s sporting culture continues to produce stars, but the question remains: how well does the nation care for them when the spotlight fades?
