Ruto Worried After Receiving New Voter Registration Data from Rift Valley Ahead of 2027

President William Ruto has raised concern over low voter registration in the Rift Valley, warning that many eligible residents risk missing the chance to vote in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a funeral in Bomet County, the head of state expressed frustration at the apparent lack of enthusiasm among residents from his political stronghold.

He noted that despite ongoing voter registration exercises, turnout has remained low.

Ruto revealed that nearly half a million young people in the region have not applied for national identity cards, even after reaching the age of 18.

Without these documents, they cannot register as voters, effectively locking themselves out of the electoral process.

In addition, the president pointed out that about 1.8 million people who already possess ID cards have yet to register as voters.

This, he said, brings the total number of eligible but unregistered voters in the region to more than 2.3 million.

The president described the situation as disappointing, especially given the political importance of the Rift Valley in national elections.

He questioned why he should seek support from other regions while his own backyard lags behind in voter registration.

Ruto urged residents, particularly the youth, to take responsibility by acquiring their identification documents and registering as voters before the next election cycle.

He emphasized that participation in elections is a key civic duty and plays a crucial role in shaping the country’s leadership.

The president also reminded the electorate that he has continued to serve and engage with communities across the country.

However, he cautioned that low registration numbers in his stronghold could weaken his political influence.

His remarks come shortly after the latest phase of continuous voter registration ended on April 30, highlighting the urgency of increasing participation ahead of 2027.
