He spoke on Sunday during the homecoming of DCP Deputy Secretary General Martin Ole Kamwaro.
He revealed that he had agreed to step aside for Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua to be Raila’s running mate after Raila personally requested his support.
In Kitui County, Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka attended the renaming of Kyuso Girls to Mama Pauline Kalonzo Girls School. He warned local leaders allied to the government that their actions betray the region’s interests.
According to Kalonzo, Raila convinced him that Karua would attract more votes from women across the country. Kalonzo admitted that the explanation made sense and prompted him to withdraw his candidacy for the deputy president position, despite initially unveiling his own running mate.
Kalonzo also expressed confidence that Kenyans in the diaspora will back the United Opposition. He accused President Ruto’s government of overtaxing citizens and stalling key development projects in Kambaland.
“After Raila called me, I went to my farm to reflect. I agreed with him because we had already been on the ballot together in 2013 and 2017. I thought it was time to restrategize,” Kalonzo explained.
He insisted that Azimio won the 2022 presidential election, though the official results declared William Ruto the victor.
Well-placed sources have revealed that in exchange for dropping his deputy bid, Kalonzo negotiated for a stronger position for his Wiper Party within Azimio.
Reports indicate that Wiper was promised key cabinet positions if Raila had formed government, including the Energy and Foreign Affairs ministries.
It is also alleged that Kalonzo pushed for the Transport and Infrastructure docket but was informed that the portfolio had already been reserved for a nominee from the Mt Kenya region.
Kalonzo emphasized that his decision in 2022 was a sacrifice for unity within the coalition. However, he now expects Raila to endorse him in the next general election.
“This time, I believe it is my turn. I supported him faithfully. Now he should support me,” Kalonzo said firmly.
