“I Confronted Oburu” — Ledama Ole Kina Reveals Clash Over ODM SG Position Ledama Ole Kina

Ledama Ole Kina, the Senator for Narok, has revealed details of a tense confrontation with Oburu Oginga over the race for the Secretary General position within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Speaking openly about his ambitions, Ledama claimed he was informed that his chances of becoming the party’s Secretary General were limited due to tribal considerations — an assertion he says prompted him to directly challenge Oburu.

“I confronted Oburu Oginga because I was told I could not be Secretary General because of tribe. That is not the ODM I believe in,” he stated.

The position is currently held by Edwin Sifuna, the Nairobi Senator, whom Ledama has recently signaled interest in replacing.

His remarks now bring to the surface underlying tensions within the party as internal competition for key leadership roles intensifies.

Ledama strongly criticized the alleged use of ethnic factors in determining party leadership, arguing that such practices contradict ODM’s founding principles.

He maintained that positions within the party should be awarded based on merit, loyalty, and proven contribution rather than community background.

According to the outspoken senator, he has spent years building and defending the party’s ideals both in Parliament and on the national stage, and believes he is fully qualified to take on the Secretary General role.

The revelations come at a time when ODM, associated with veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga, is experiencing growing internal debate over succession, inclusivity, and the direction of its leadership ahead of future political realignments.

Political observers say Ledama’s statements could reignite discussions about internal democracy within ODM, particularly around how senior positions are allocated. Concerns about favoritism and ethnic balancing have occasionally surfaced in the past, and his comments may increase pressure on the party to address such perceptions.

By speaking out, Ledama appears to be positioning himself as a reform-minded figure within the party, challenging it to uphold its image as a national movement that accommodates leaders from diverse communities.

Whether ODM leadership will formally respond to the claims remains unclear, but the remarks have already sparked debate among supporters and critics alike.
