Raila’s ODM Loyalists Fired as Oburu Odinga Seizes Control and Signals New Political Alliances

A significant internal shake-up is reportedly unfolding within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) after several staff members closely linked to long-time party leader Raila Odinga were dismissed as part of a wider restructuring effort.

The changes are said to be spearheaded by Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, who has recently taken a more visible role in overseeing the party’s operations.

According to insiders familiar with the developments, the veteran politician has begun reorganising ODM’s internal structures as the party prepares for future political battles.

Sources within the party say several aides and administrative staff who previously worked under Raila’s leadership were quietly relieved of their duties in recent days.

The move, according to party insiders, is intended to create space for a new team aligned with the current leadership’s strategy.

Political observers say the restructuring reflects an effort by Oburu to consolidate control of the party machinery while reshaping ODM’s leadership and operational direction ahead of the 2027 Kenyan General Election.

However, the developments have not been received quietly within the party.

Members of the Linda Mwananchi faction—an emerging group within ODM that has been vocal on governance and opposition politics—are said to be uneasy about the changes.

Many within the faction believe the restructuring could signal a shift away from the party’s long-standing role as a firm opposition voice in national politics.

The concerns have been fueled by reports suggesting that the party’s new leadership could be exploring broader political alliances.

Among the possibilities reportedly being discussed is a potential political understanding with the ruling coalition led by President William Ruto and his party, the United Democratic Alliance.

Supporters of the emerging strategy argue that exploring alliances could strengthen ODM’s national influence and allow the party to participate more actively in shaping government policies.

They believe cooperation could open new political opportunities and expand the party’s reach beyond its traditional strongholds.

Critics within the party, however, warn that such a move could weaken ODM’s identity and alienate loyal supporters who have long viewed the party as a central pillar of Kenya’s opposition politics.

The internal transition is also symbolised by a shift in the party’s physical base of operations. The new leadership is said to have established offices along Riverside Drive, moving away from the historic Capitol Hill offices that had long been associated with Raila Odinga’s era of leadership.

Political analysts say these changes represent one of the most significant transitional moments in ODM’s history.

With internal debates intensifying and new alliances being considered, the party now appears to be entering a new phase of political evolution.

As Kenya gradually moves closer to the 2027 elections, the decisions made within ODM in the coming months could play a major role in shaping not only the party’s future but also the broader direction of the country’s political landscape.
