Ruto Vows to Protect Raila Odinga’s Political Vision After His Passing

President William Ruto has publicly pledged to protect and uphold the political vision he shared with the late opposition leader Raila Odinga, assuring Kenyans that their agreement was meant to transform the country’s political culture.

Speaking during a public address in Malindi, the President reflected on the understanding he had reached with Odinga before his death.

According to Ruto, their cooperation was not about sharing political power but about creating a more inclusive and peaceful political environment in Kenya.

Ruto emphasized that their agreement aimed to end what he described as the long-standing politics of division, hatred, and tribalism that have historically influenced the country’s political landscape.

“I will not betray the vision we agreed on,” the President said while addressing supporters, insisting that the partnership was meant to promote unity and national development.

His remarks come at a time when debate has intensified within the political arena over the future of the agenda that had been agreed upon between the Kenya Kwanza administration and leaders aligned with Odinga.

Recently, the implementation of the so-called Point Agenda — a framework designed to guide reforms and cooperation between political sides — has sparked sharp differences within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

While some ODM leaders, including party figure Oburu Oginga, have indicated that the agenda has made notable progress, another faction within the party has taken a different position.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has argued that the agreement effectively expired earlier this year, claiming that key issues outlined in the framework have not been fully implemented.

Among the concerns raised by critics are delays in implementing the NADCO report and the failure to adequately address demands related to compensation for victims affected during past political protests.

These disagreements have created fresh political tension as leaders debate whether the original spirit of the agreement is still being honored.

At the same time, the evolving relationship between Kenya Kwanza leaders and ODM figures has generated mixed reactions within different political camps.

Some leaders support continued cooperation, arguing that it promotes stability and national unity.

Others, however, worry that expanding partnerships could complicate internal political dynamics, especially as the country gradually shifts focus toward future electoral contests.

With a Joint Parliamentary Group meeting expected to review the progress of the Point Agenda, the coming weeks could play a crucial role in determining the direction of the agreement.

For now, President Ruto’s message remains clear: he intends to preserve the political vision he shared with Raila Odinga and maintain the commitment they made toward building a more inclusive Kenya.
