Speaker Wetang’ula Gives Direction After MP Ngendo Died In Chopper Crash

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has formally announced the death of Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament Johanna Ng'eno, who perished in a tragic helicopter crash on Saturday, February 28.

In an official communication delivered to the House, the Speaker informed Members of Parliament and the entire parliamentary fraternity of the untimely demise of the three-term legislator.

The crash occurred at around 4:45pm in Mosop, Nandi County, claiming the lives of Ng’eno and five other passengers.

“It is with profound sorrow that I hereby notify the House and the entire Parliamentary fraternity of the untimely and tragic demise of the Member of Parliament for Emurua Dikirr Constituency, the late Hon. Johana Ng’eno Kipyegon, CBS, MP,” Wetang’ula stated in his communiqué.

Ng’eno had been serving his third consecutive term in Parliament, having first been elected in 2013. Over the years, he built a reputation as a vocal and active legislator.

At the time of his death, he was the Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works.

He also served as a Member of the Liaison Committee, where he played a key role in coordinating parliamentary oversight functions.

During the 12th Parliament, Ng’eno was a Member of the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, contributing to legislative debates and reforms in the legal sector.

Under his leadership as chair of the Housing Committee, Parliament passed the Affordable Housing Act, 2024.

The law established a framework aimed at expanding access to decent and affordable housing for Kenyans across the country.

The Speaker highlighted the late MP’s academic achievements and professional growth.

Born in 1972, Ng’eno began his education at Mogondo Primary School before proceeding to Maseno National School for his secondary education.

He later pursued higher studies abroad, earning a Bachelor of Arts in International Law from Kyiv TSN University in Ukraine.

Upon returning to Kenya, he continued advancing his academic credentials. He obtained a Master of Arts in International Studies from the University of Nairobi, a Bachelor of Laws degree from Mount Kenya University, and a Postgraduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law.

In September 2025, he was admitted to the Bar as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, marking a significant milestone in his legal career.

On behalf of the House and the Parliamentary Service Commission, Wetang’ula conveyed heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the late MP, as well as to the families of the five other victims who lost their lives in the crash.

To support the bereaved family, the Speaker appointed a team led by Tinderet MP Hon. Julius Melly, assisted by Hon. Mugambi Rindikiri and eight other Members of Parliament.

The team will liaise with the family to coordinate support and burial arrangements, pending the family’s decisions.

As Parliament and the nation mourn, tributes continue to pour in, remembering Johanna Ng’eno as a dedicated servant of the people whose impact in the House will not be forgotten.
