"Tumekubali" Gachagua's Ally Cate Waruguru Admits Ruto's Govt Still Holds Edge in Mt Kenya, Urge Opposition to Change Tactics

Former Laikipia Woman Representative Cate Waruguru, a close ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has acknowledged that President William Ruto’s government still holds a political advantage in the Mt Kenya region, even as it faces growing public discontent.

In a Facebook post on Friday morning, January 30, Waruguru described Mt Kenya as a pragmatic voting bloc guided by results rather than slogans, noting that political realities cannot be wished away as the country reflects on its future.

She pointed out that the incumbent administration continues to benefit from access to state machinery, high visibility, and the absence of a single dominant alternative voice, factors she said have always mattered in Kenyan politics and continue to shape Mt Kenya politics.

However, Waruguru argued that incumbency alone is no longer enough to sustain public trust, citing the high cost of living that continues to strain families, farmers, and small businesses, alongside a widening trust deficit among citizens who feel unheard.

She also highlighted governance concerns, saying the recent SHA scandal has raised serious questions about transparency, accountability, and priorities in public service, further complicating the government’s standing with voters.

Turning to the opposition, the former Laikipia Woman Representive called for a change of tactics, urging leaders to move away from endless political maneuvering and instead focus on people-centred economics, institutional integrity, and decisive action where citizens are hurting.

Waruguru's remarks come as President Ruto and his UDA party intensify efforts to regain ground in Mt Kenya following Gachagua’s impeachment in October 2024. The ruling party has staged grassroots engagements, with elected leaders returning to the region and President Ruto himself making a visit to Gachagua’s home county of Nyeri for a major UDA event.
