Tragedy: Headteacher Killed, Another Principal Injured in Road Accident Along Nairobi-Nakuru Highway

At least seven people lost their lives in a tragic road accident at Kikopey, Gilgil, along the busy Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.

The crash occurred when a truck, reportedly heading toward Nakuru, lost control and rammed into two matatus traveling in the opposite direction.

Police investigations suggest that the truck was speeding and may have suffered brake failure moments before the collision.

Five people died instantly at the scene, while two others were rushed to a hospital in Gilgil, where they later succumbed to their injuries. Several other passengers were left with serious injuries and are still receiving treatment.

Among those who died was Mwalimu Hellen, the headteacher of Thugunui Primary School.

Gilgil Member of Parliament Hon. Martha Wangari confirmed the incident and paid tribute to Hellen, describing her as “an educationist per excellence and a leader in her own right.”

She praised her dedication to education and her positive impact on learners and the community.

Tributes have continued to pour in from teachers, parents, students, and leaders who knew her. Many described her as hardworking, kind, and committed to uplifting education standards.

Mr. Mahinda, the principal of Thugunui Secondary School, also sustained injuries in the same accident and is currently receiving treatment.

May the bereaved families and the Thugunui fraternity find strength and comfort during this difficult period.

Frequent accidents have been linked to speeding, mechanical failures, and reckless driving. Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before long journeys.
