The announcement was made, during a meeting with National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs) at State House, Nairobi.
The President stated that the stipend will take effect from July 1, 2026, once it is included in the national budget. Village elders, who have long served without formal recognition, will now be officially registered, issued identification cards, and recognised as civil servants.
“Hawa watu tunataka tuwasajili, tuwape vitambulisho, alafu tuwape stipend ya Ksh3,500,” President Ruto said, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of these community leaders.
He noted that village elders play a key role in community mobilisation, security coordination, and dispute resolution.
