Speaking on Thursday during the launch of the NYOTA start-up capital disbursement programme for Kisii, Nyamira, and Migori counties, the President revealed plans to construct a modern airport and upgrade Gusii Stadium to international standards projects residents have waited for over decades.
Ruto confirmed that he will return to Kisii next month for a comprehensive development tour, during which construction on both projects is expected to officially begin.
“I will be back here next month for a development tour. We have agreed that Kisii must be transformed,” the President said.
“I want to assure you that I will personally come to launch the construction of the airport.” he added
According to Ruto, the government had initially planned to acquire new land to replace the existing Suneka airstrip. However, challenges around land acquisition forced a strategic rethink. Instead, the current facility will be expanded and modernized, with the runway realigned to meet aviation safety and operational standards.
The government has already allocated KSh 400 million for the airport project, with ground works scheduled to commence as early as next month. Once complete, the airport is expected to significantly improve air connectivity in the region, boost trade, and attract new investment opportunities.
In the same breath, the President announced a major facelift for Gusii Stadium, setting aside KSh 770 million to upgrade the facility to meet international requirements. Ruto explained that the existing stadium land is insufficient for such an expansion, prompting the government to include the neighboring Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) showgrounds.
He revealed that discussions with ASK management are already underway, with funds allocated to facilitate their relocation and ensure a smooth expansion process. During construction, sporting activities will be temporarily moved to alternative venues as sections of the stadium are demolished to pave the way for the upgrade.
Beyond sports and aviation, Ruto also unveiled plans to relocate the Kisii GK Prison from the town center. The prime land will be repurposed for affordable housing, a move aimed at easing congestion while expanding home ownership opportunities for local residents.
The multi-billion-shilling projects form part of a broader government strategy to unlock Kisii’s economic potential, create jobs, and position the county as a regional hub. The new airport will complement Kisumu International Airport and the planned Narok Airport, while easing pressure on smaller airstrips in the region.
For many residents, the announcements signaled more than just new buildings—they represented long-awaited recognition and a renewed sense of inclusion in the national development agenda.
As Kisii prepares for the President’s return next month, optimism is high that these pledges will finally translate into visible change on the ground.
