Babu Owino Told the Only Way to Save His Political Career Ahead of 2027 as ODM Rift Deepens

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has been advised on the best strategy to safeguard his political future ahead of the 2027 elections, amid growing divisions within his party, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Owino, now serving his second term, has been pushing to challenge Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, but internal opposition within ODM is reportedly complicating his gubernatorial ambitions.

Party insiders warn that the current political environment in Nairobi may not favor Owino, pointing to increasing factionalism and rival alliances within ODM that could undermine his campaign.

Homabay Town MP Peter Kaluma publicly suggested that Owino should abandon his bid for governor in 2027 and instead consider joining Sakaja as a running mate, while waiting for a stronger opportunity in 2032.

Kaluma argued that Owino’s age advantage and political experience could be better leveraged by securing a deputy governor role, rather than risking a divisive contest against a well-backed incumbent.

He further cautioned Owino against trusting certain political alliances, claiming influential figures have already chosen another candidate for the Nairobi gubernatorial race.

Kaluma urged Owino to negotiate with Sakaja for a deputy governor position, a move that would allow him to remain politically relevant while gaining executive experience in Nairobi’s leadership.

The advice has sparked mixed reactions: supporters believe Owino has strong grassroots support to win, while critics say aligning with Sakaja could stabilize his career and prevent potential setbacks.

As the 2027 elections approach, the ODM rift and shifting alliances in Nairobi politics underscore that Owino’s next move will be decisive for his political future and influence in the capital.
