Cyrus Jirongo, a flamboyant politician and former Lugari MP who passed away in a car accident on December 13, 2025, had a life filled with highs and lows.
In an open interview, his first wife, Joan Chemutai Kimeto, disclosed a startling reaction to his financial difficulties: when auctioneers paid them a visit, their marriage was completely changed and she was deeply horrified.
The romance between Jirongo and Kimeto started in the Lang'ata estate in Nairobi in the middle of the 1980s.
After the 18-year-old Kimeto became pregnant, the young hustler, who worked from public phone booths, eloped with her to Mombasa, despite her family's wishes for her to study overseas.
At his peak, Jirongo enjoyed lavish success: a proper office, government contracts, and generosity toward family and associates.
Kimeto, a director in his Cypper Enterprises, supported his political ambitions despite reservations about his open-door policy to all seekers of help.
But in the late 1990s, everything crumbled. After President Daniel arap Moi disbanded YK'92 post-1992 elections, Jirongo fell out of favor.
Contracts stalled, payments dried up, and auctioneers relentlessly pursued his assets in a prolonged cat-and-mouse game.
At that point, according to Kimeto, Jirongo did the unimaginable and started introducing her to one woman after another as his new wife.
Their monogamous union became a polygamous family as the numbers increased one by one.
He allegedly introduced up to 18 women as wives at its height, which astonished and unnerved Kimeto, who was used to an exclusive marriage.
Despite being well-known for having four primary spouses from various ethnic groups, this stage brought to light Jirongo's peculiar coping strategy in the face of asset seizures and bankruptcy.
After moving to the US to pursue her studies, Kimeto divorced him but kept in touch with him for the benefit of their kids.
As Jirongo's burial on December 30 draws near, his complicated personal life—which combines kindness and controversy—remains a topic of discussion.
