"We Never Voted For This Govt & We Might Not Do So Come 2027 For This Reason" Oburu Odinga

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Oburu Odinga has stated that the party did not support President William Ruto’s election and only joined the government later through a political arrangement aimed at securing development for their people.

Speaking during a public engagement, Oburu said ODM’s decision to work with the Kenya Kwanza administration was misunderstood by many Kenyans.

He clarified that the party did not vote for Ruto in the 2022 General Election and therefore does not consider itself part of the government in the conventional sense.

“We did not vote for this government. We entered through the window with a clear agenda,” Oburu said.

He explained that the agenda was purely to push for development projects in regions that have historically felt sidelined, especially Nyanza and other opposition strongholds.

Oburu maintained that engaging with the government was a strategic move meant to ensure roads, schools, hospitals and other key projects reach ODM supporters.

He argued that remaining in constant opposition without dialogue had previously denied their regions meaningful development.

However, the ODM leader was quick to point out that cooperation with the current administration does not translate to long-term political support.

He firmly stated that the party is not bound to support President Ruto beyond the 2027 General Election.

“This arrangement does not mean we have sold our souls or our future,” Oburu said.

“After 2027, we are free to make decisions that favour our people. If that means joining another coalition with a better agenda, we will do so.”

His remarks come amid growing debate within ODM and the wider opposition on the party’s relationship with the government.

Some supporters have accused party leaders of abandoning opposition politics, claims Oburu dismissed as propaganda.

He assured ODM supporters that the party remains focused on protecting their interests and shaping Kenya’s political future.

According to Oburu, ODM’s engagement with the government should be viewed as a tactical move, not a surrender, as the party prepares for future political realignments ahead of 2027.
