Fresh drama has emerged as Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei who is a staunch ally of President William Ruto has demanded the immediate resignation of Edwin Sifuna.
Cherargei has argued that Sifuna, the Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has become a stumbling block to the broad-based government established through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
This friction has surfaced following the historic agreement between President Ruto and the late Raila Odinga.
While the two leaders had envisioned a unified working relationship to stabilize the country, Sifuna has maintained a different stance.
He has consistently voiced sharp criticisms against the current administration, leading many to believe that he has failed to align with the party’s official position.
Senator Cherargei has insisted that Sifuna must either shape up or step down.
The Senator has claimed that it is hypocritical for a high-ranking official to enjoy the benefits of a coalition while simultaneously attacking the presidency.
Cherargei has emphasized that the government has prioritized unity, yet Sifuna’s rhetoric has continued to fuel division.
On his part, Sifuna has remained defiant. He has stated that ODM will charter its own path in the 2027 general elections.
According to Sifuna, this independence is exactly what the late Raila Odinga had intended for the party.
He has suggested that the current cooperation is a temporary necessity rather than a permanent political marriage.
Conversely, President Ruto has banked on the ODM camp to help him secure a second term in office.
With the 2027 polls approaching, the President has sought a consolidated support base.
However, if key figures like Sifuna have refused to cooperate, that strategy may be in jeopardy.
