Major Boost for Sonko as His New Political Party's Registration Approved​​

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has reached a significant milestone in his political career with the official registration of his new political party, the National Economic Development Party (NEDP). 

The approval was granted on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) headquarters in Westlands, Nairobi.

Sonko received the NEDP registration certificate in the presence of senior party officials and a group of supporters, marking a crucial step toward reviving his political ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections. 

The certificate signifies that the party has met all legal and administrative requirements outlined in the Political Parties Act, allowing it to participate fully in Kenya’s political landscape.

“This approval is a new beginning for me and for Kenyans who support development-focused politics,” Sonko said shortly after receiving the certificate. 

“I look forward to building a party that prioritizes the economic growth and welfare of every Kenyan.”

While Sonko is recognized as the de facto leader of NEDP, reports indicate that a formal installation ceremony for his party leadership is expected in early 2026.

Party officials say this will solidify his position and prepare the party for active participation in upcoming political contests.

Sonko’s political journey has faced major hurdles in recent years. In 2020, he was impeached from the office of Nairobi Governor on allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and corruption.

The Senate’s decision, which was later upheld by the Supreme Court, barred him from seeking any political seat at that time.

The former governor’s political challenges were also linked to disagreements with senior government officials, including former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Despite these setbacks, Sonko has maintained a low but steady presence in political circles, strategizing for a return through a new platform.

With the creation of NEDP, Sonko now has an independent party that can support his vision for economic development and political engagement.

Party insiders emphasize that NEDP will provide a space for like-minded individuals to participate in national politics while promoting policies that prioritize growth, employment, and social welfare.

The NEDP is among several political parties recently submitted to the ORPP for approval. Others include the People Centred Party (PEC) and the United Super Alliance Party (USAP). 

The ORPP has invited members of the public to raise any objections regarding the registered parties within seven days, ensuring transparency in the approval process.
