Millie Odhiambo has spoken out strongly about veteran lawyer John Khaminwa and said she will nominate him in the next round to be made Senior Counsel.
She said it is very sad that a lawyer who is now 87 years old has never been given this honour, yet he has served Kenya for many years with courage and honesty.
Millie said John Khaminwa is not an ordinary lawyer. She said he is a brave man who used the law to fight for Kenyans during very hard times.
She said when many people were afraid to speak, Khaminwa stood up and defended people who were suffering. He spoke for the poor, the weak, and those who were being treated badly by the system.
She said Khaminwa handled many big cases in Kenya’s history. According to Millie, he fought for human rights, democracy, and justice when it was risky to do so.
She added that many lawyers today enjoy freedom and space to work because people like Khaminwa sacrificed a lot in the past.
Millie asked why such a man has been ignored for so long. She said the title of Senior Counsel should not be about politics, money, or connections.
She said it should be about the work someone has done and the impact they have made. In her view, John Khaminwa fully qualifies for the title, even more than some people who already have it.
She promised that she will personally nominate him in the next round and push for his name to be considered. Millie said Kenya must learn to respect and honour its heroes while they are still alive.
She said it would be very wrong if the country waits until Khaminwa is gone to start praising him.
She ended by saying giving John Khaminwa the Senior Counsel title would be a small but important way of saying thank you for his long service to the nation.
