“I Shall Be the Spokesperson of the ‘Washenzi’ in ODM” — Sifuna in Hot Soup Over His Remarks

ODM Senator Junet Mohamed has stepped into the political spotlight, declaring that he will be the spokesperson for the party’s so-called “washenzi,” a term used to describe grassroots supporters, in response to comments made by ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna regarding the party’s direction ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking during a media briefing on Monday, Junet asserted that the voices of ordinary ODM members, often referred to as the “washenzi,” must be heard in shaping the party’s political strategy.

“I shall be the spokesperson of the ‘washenzi’ in ODM. Their views matter and will guide the party’s decisions, especially as we approach the next general election,” Junet said.

The Senator’s remarks come amid growing speculation about whether ODM will field its own presidential candidate or align with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) for the 2027 election.

Political analysts note that Junet’s declaration signals a push to ensure that grassroots voices influence the party’s decision-making, counterbalancing the influence of party elites.

Junet also emphasized the importance of unity within ODM, stressing that internal debates and consultations with members across the country are crucial for building consensus.

“The party belongs to the people, and their views should shape our path forward,” he added.

Observers suggest that Junet’s positioning could strengthen his profile within ODM as a champion of grassroots interests, while also signaling to party leaders that the “washenzi” cannot be ignored.

As Kenya’s political environment heats up, the role of ordinary party supporters may prove decisive in shaping ODM’s strategy for 2027.
